Swim Lessons

Swim Lessons at the Cunningham Swimming Pool  – June 26 – 30

Swim lessons are not only about learning to swim. For those children or adults who already know how to swim, lessons can be important for learning safety techniques. Levels 5 and 6 may be combined depending on number of students. Swim team members age 9 or above would most likely qualify for levels 5 and 6. The following classes will be offered during Cunningham Swimming Pool swim lessons:

Level 1-Introduction to Water Skills
Objective: To help swimmers feel comfortable in the water and to enjoy the water safely

Some skills of level one include: floating and breath control (learning to be comfortable with water around face, blowing bubbles)

Level 2-Fundamental Aquatic Skills

Objective:  To give swimmers success with fundamental skills

Some skills of level two include: entering water by stepping or jumping in from the side, submerging entire head and opening eyes underwater

Level 3-Stroke Development

Objective: To build on skills in Level 2 through additional guided practice

Some skills of level three include: jump into deep water, head first entry from sitting or kneeling, submerging and retrieving an object, bobbing, survival float, treading water, elementary rescues and safe diving

Level 4-Stroke Improvement

Objective: To develop confidence in the strokes already learned and to improve other aquatic skills

Some skills of level four include: diving, underwater swimming, feet-first surface dive, survival floating, treading and back floating and safely assisting distressed swimmers

Level 5-Stroke Refinement

Objective: Coordination and refinement of strokes

Some skills of level five include: shallow dive, tuck and pike surface dives, 2 minutes of survival floating, elementary backstroke, survival swimming and rescue breathing

Level 6-Swimming and Skill Proficiency

Objective: Refine strokes to swim with more ease, efficiency, power and smoothness; Personal Water Safety and fundamentals of diving

Some skills of level six include: sidestroke, feet first surface dive and retrieving a weighted object
